Teaching Foreign Language to Child

Teaching foreign language to child: Children s ability to learn languages is remarkable, especially under 4 years of age. At this age they are developing their understanding of the world and how it works. And the fundamental understanding the child develops at this age will be the same throughout the rest of life.

Children who live in a bilingual home will have no difficulty learning both. Children, once they have learned the language or languages used in the home, will find it more difficult to learn another language later at school. This is because they are not exposed to that new language for the same length of time as they were while learning their mother tongue .

But there s more to it than that &when children learn language they learn by listening and speaking &you did, didn t you? They don t learn language by studying grammar, spelling, sentence construction, etc. This is blindingly obvious, isn t it? &but if you ve had the normal language-learning experience at school you'll know that this is exactly how language is taught!

Thankfully, as a home school teacher, you can choose to do it differently &even if you don t know the language your child is learning (yet!).

It s important, then, that you use resources that bring the language to life &the language must be fun to learn &should be learned by listening and speaking &using games and fun activities. An excellent resource for teaching foreign language to child is here .
