What is a Home School Curriculum and why is it important?
A home school curriculum is the 'subject matter' you want your child to learn. So, that includes Math, English, Science, etc...but there really is so much more to it than that!...or at least there should be...
Your curriculum should be seen to include everything the child learns about... all the subjects but also walking, talking, good manners, taking responsibility, etc. Children are taught how to walk and talk...so walking and talking are part of the curriculum. (It s possible to walk and talk intelligently and it s possible to walk and talk unintelligently & the intelligent way must be taught to the child!)
Remember...the great advantage of home schooling is that everything the child learns can be presented in the same way as walking and talking...Math, English or Science CAN be presented to the child as simply another 'thing we do around here' rather than as a 'chore' or something unpleasant. In other words the home school can always find a way to present any subject matter as FUN or at worst 'really interesting' and as part of everyday life. This is something formal schools simply can't do. And this is why the home school curriculum must be carefully designed and implemented.
Normally when we talk about a curriculum we think of 'subjects' in the same way we do when talking about the curriculum in an elementary or high school. Yes, even homschoolers think this way & even those whose children have never set foot in 'formal' school! This is where we do need to consciously shift our thinking to include all the child's learning in our understanding of the term 'home school curriculum'.
